The Relentless Preamplifier
The new Relentless Preamplifier is the ultimate in preamplifier design. The preamplifier plays a critical role in musical playback; the point in the reproduction stage when the music signal is particularly susceptible to compromise through noise and distortion. The use of three separate chassis in the design of the Relentless Preamplifier—a dedicated audio chassis for each channel separated by a power supply/control section—addresses these challenges and brings other benefits besides.
Power Supply
Positioned between the two audio channels, the power supply makes use of extensive electrical and magnetic shielding to keep radiated interference out of critical preamplifier circuits. Internal line conditioning circuitry filters RF noise on the AC power and compensates for asymmetric power waveforms and DC on the mains. Power for the preamplifier stages comes from two 150 VA toroidal transformer – one dedicated to the analog circuitry and one for the digital and control circuitry. These transformers drive an 8-amp bridge rectifier and 26,400 microfarads of filter capacitance. The two regulators for the analog stages are scaled-down versions of those used in the Relentless Mono amplifier. The separate digital regulator is a monothilic platform with thermal and current limiting protection in the unlikely event of a fault. The Relentless Preamplifier has nearly as much power supply capability as many power amplifiers.
Room to Breathe
The input stage in each mono preamplifier is the result of a design experiment for a circuit that hadn’t been used in any previous D’Agostino preamplifier. As part of development, a version was tested in the existing Momentum Preamplifier. The overwhelmingly positive results led directly to the launch of the Momentum HD Preamplifier. From there, the fullest expression of this idea was developed, and the Relentless Preamplifier was underway.
The audio circuit topology starts with a completely unique new discrete differential FET input stage featuring a voltage input signal capability of an extraordinary 30 volts. With an input impedance of over 1 MOhm, the Relentless Preamplifier’s front end is immune to source related electrical issues. In normal operation, component heating can lead to performance and sonic degradation. Developed specifically for the Relentless Preamplifier, a unique circuit maintains a stable bias so that temperature related anomalies are offset thus preserving performance during extended listening.
Featuring only balanced XLR inputs the Relentless Preamplifier topology rejects common-mode input noise over an unusually wide bandwidth. All signal gain is realized in the current domain using proprietary multiple-output current mirrors with nearly 30 times the linearity of other designs. Executed with four-layer circuit boards for superior signal quality. The use of four-layer boards dramatically reduces distortion and propagation levels as compared to the more commonplace, two layer boards.
The analog and digital circuit elements are isolated, including ground planes, from each other. Where necessary, digital control signals are optically coupled to analog circuits. The signal switching relays are hermetically sealed and use gold-plated contacts for maximum signal integrity.
Utilizing no negative feedback anywhere, core D’Agostino circuit concepts include a signal path that is fully complementary and balanced from input to output achieving a frequency response flat to 120 kHz.. The overall result is a musically dense and dynamically rich signal presented to the balanced outputs.
Separate but Linked
Arguably, the most striking element of the Relentless Preamplifier is the pair of volume controls fronting the two audio chassis. Volume control circuits are often overlooked, if not actively minimized, in preamplifier designs. This is not the case in the Relentless Preamplifier. Each volume control is constructed using 14 separate metal components ensuring the smoothest response and control of the military-grade, high-linearity solid-state switches and discrete precision resistors employed in the volume circuit. The bandwidth and transient response of the Relentless Preamplifier is completely unaffected by the volume setting. As a result, high frequencies sound especially smooth and extended, and music emerges from “jet black” silence.
The volume settings are displayed via the elegant swiss watch inspired volume wands or can be displayed numerically, from 0 to 99.
Two Preamplifiers in One
The Relentless Preamplifier is a two source/two zone preamplifier. This means that the Relentless Preamplifier can simultaneously control the switching and volume of two sources in two separate rooms or zones. Listening sources may be two analog sources or when equipped with the streaming digital module, one digital source and one analog source. In a one zone system, either volume control will adjust volume in the main room or Zone 1. If two zone operation is desired, the upper volume control manages the Zone 1 volume and the lower volume control adjusts the Zone 2 volume.
Preamplifier status in your hand
Housed in machined aluminum and copper, the Relentless Preamplifier remote control is a comfortable design operated via touch pad. Control buttons are minimized with most of the operation executed by navigating via a tactile touch pad. Bluetooth 5.0 technology extends the usable range of the remote control and eliminates the line-of-sight issues that plague conventional infrared designs. New for the Relentless Preamplifier is bi-directional remote-control functionality. All adjustments made on the Relentless Preamplifier front panel are reflected on the remote control’s display screen including input, volume, and balance selections.
Integration Features
The Relentless Preamplifier’s primary focus is centered around ultimate stereo playback but it fits nicely in a home theater system. Input Three can be configured for Theater Bypass. In this mode, the Relentless Preamplifier’s volume control is bypassed and volume control for the main loudspeakers is now controlled by the connected surround-sound processor. RS-232 and 12 Volt triggers facilitate integration into advanced home control systems. Additional DC power outputs for future products as well as two programming ports offers easy growth and performance options in the future.
Optional Digital Streaming Module (DSM)
The Relentless Preamplifier is the first D’Agostino preamplifier to offer an optional DSM. This digital enhancement adds connectivity for legacy sources, USB functionality, and premier streaming capability. Field upgradeable, the DSM adds SPDIF coaxial, Optical, USB-A, and RJ-45 and Wi-Fi network inputs. For latency free playback of high-resolution network content, 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet is supported.
Customized apps for iOS devices provide easy control of music collections, streaming content, and unit control. Subscription streaming services Tidal, Qobuz, and Spotify are native within the app. With appropriately encoded music files, MQA decoding is standard. Additionally, Roon Music management is also available as an alternative music management program.
Completely isolated from the analog circuitry, the DSM is housed in the power supply/control chassis. Requiring three separate circuit boards the core element is a pair of DACs configured in differential mode with each one configured to handle the positive and negative signals for each channel. Capable of handling today’s highest resolution sources, PCM signals up to 32 bit/384 KHz and DSD signals up to DSD256 (11.2MHz) are decoded natively. Often overlooked or downplayed, the analog section of a DAC significantly impacts the final sonic performance of digital music. Internal balanced connections carry the final analog signal to the connecting feet and onward to each audio chassis. From here, the analog music signal takes advantage of the entire power and analog circuitry within the three chassis of the Relentless Preamplifier.
Coupling innovative circuitry, distinctive materials, and artisan manufacturing excellence in a sophisticated architecture, the Relentless Preamplifier is the perfect centerpiece for the ultimate music system.

CH Precision D1.5 CD/SACD Player/Transport
MORSe
Mechanically Optimized Reading System

CH Precision
D1.5 CD/SACD Player/Transport
Despite advances in high-resolution file-replay, the optical disc remains the reference standard for digital music replay. Those who have predicted the imminent demise of CD and who already danced on the grave of SACD might want to take a look at the rude health of the vinyl LP, a format long ago consigned by many to the dustbin of audio history. In fact, there have never been so many CD and SACD titles (or formats) available – and they have never been so affordable, making them the most consistent and stable digital source currently available – and one that is constantly evolving as superior materials and manufacturing techniques continue to improve performance. They are a source that’s going to be with us for years to come, making a high-performance optical disc player central to any high-end audio system. But the key to that statement is the term “high-performance”. At a time when many CD players are little more than an off-the-shelf transport option, bolted onto a multi-input DAC, the reputation of optical disc replay has suffered significantly.
Product Description
The heart of any disc player is the transport mechanism itself. But what do you do if current mechs simply aren’t up to the job? If you are CH Precision, you build your own! The critical mechanical parts of our proprietary Mechanically Optimized Reading System (MORSe) are built entirely in-house, combined with. The carefully selected optical pick-up and motor are precisely mounted on a massive brass sled that weighs almost 1kg (2.2lbs). This high-mass lowers the mechanical resonance frequency of the module several orders of magnitude lower than in most other transports, while ensuring an ideal counter-weight to the torque of the spinning disc.
The complete module is isolated from the rest of the chassis using four alpha-gel isolators, fine-tuned to filter vibrations all the way down to AC mains frequencies. This prevents vibrations generated by the spinning of the disc from reaching sensitive electronic boards, as well as low frequency vibrations originating in the power supply or chassis disturbing the accurate tracking of the laser mechanism.
The disc clamp is made of lightweight PEEK polymer, which provides optimal grip and dimensional stability, ensuring slip-free transmission from the direct drive motor to the disc.
The chassis holding this crucial sub-system is a 2 kg rigid aluminum structure, directly coupled to the heavy base of the D1.5. This makes an ideal mechanical ground reference for the rotating parts that, along with our updated mechanical grounding system effectively eliminates mechanical interference.
Built around the massive MORSe mechanism, the D1.5 is a configurable CD/SACD player/transport, the card-cage output architecture allowing owners to optimize the output topology to suit their system requirements, whether they need a player, transport or prefer to have both in a single unit.
The digital output board (CH-Link HD, S/PDIF, AES/EBU and TosLink) is supplied as standard. The CH-Link HD connection allows digital output of high-definition material, including DSD direct to the C1 or I1 DACs. In the case of CD replay, the D1.5 allows users to choose between the raw MQA (44.1kHz/16bit) output and an MQB output.
It is also possible to fit a pair of dedicated, mono DAC boards, utilizing our proprietary PEtER spline filter algorithm, to create a reference player capable of SACD, CD and MQA CD replay. The optional SYNC IO clock synchronization board allows the D1.5 player/transport to be slaved to either a DAC master clock or the T1 Reference clock for optimum performance. Finally, the D1.5’s performance can be further upgraded with the use of an X1 external power supply.
All replay, output and user interface functionality is accessible via the CH concentric control on the front panel, or remotely, via the CH Control App. The large AMOLED screen can be color configured to reflect different source/output formats, while the color itself and brightness can be adjusted to offer a perfect match with other units in the system. This flexibility when it comes to configuration or application, along with its ease of operation, make the D1.5 not just the highest performance but also the most adaptable, upgradable and future proof optical disc replay solution available.
