A new state-of-the-art flagship power amplifier featuring John Franks’ latest circuit topology, some 30 years in the making.

The ULTIMA mono power amplifiers have been conceived for the very finest high-end audio systems, those which by their very nature, tend to have the most demanding and most difficult-to-drive large loudspeakers. They deliver unsurpassed power delivery and are capable of effortlessly driving any speaker.

ULTIMA is the company’s most accomplished amplifier in its 30-year history and one that draws on Chord Electronics’ three decades of proprietary-technology amplifier manufacturing. It features an all-new circuit topology, the first completely new design since those early days. The new dual-feed forward error-correction amplifier technology is a progression of Dr Malcolm J Hawksford’s (emeritus professor at Essex University) technical paper, refined by Bob Cordell of Bell Labs.

ULTIMA contains Chord Electronics’ next-generation amplifier tech, a design which features Cordell’s advanced dual-feedforward error-correction topology, plus John Franks’ own advanced concepts in ultra-high-frequency power supplies.

The ULTIMA mono amplifier unit has an incredible 64 proprietary MOSFET power devices that demand the most advanced and refined drive circuitry, suitably devoid of sound-degrading components. The drive circuitry features an ultra-low-distortion, high-voltage amplifier operating at very high speed: 300 volts-per-microsecond technologies with advanced feed-forward and feedback compensation techniques.

ULTIMA is incredibly powerful and offers 780 watts into 8 ohms, 1,400 watts into 4 ohms and 2,500 watts into 2 ohms. ULTIMA’s peak output current exceeds 500 amps, an extremely high current differentiated by the speed at which the dynamic peaks can be delivered, bringing astonishing dynamics, fidelity and unrivalled musicality.

ULTIMA Pre

Designed to be entirely uncompromising, the ULTIMA preamp is a world-class amplifier with advanced proprietary Chord Electronics technology. A product of three decades of research, design and engineering here in the UK, it benefits from true dual-mono construction with separate ultra-high-frequency power supplies for each channel, giving the best possible separation. With the addition of valuable low-noise circuitry, the noise floor performance is exceptional, at beyond -135dB.

Featuring impressive double-height dimensions, the ULTIMA preamp has been created to perfectly complement the flagship ULTIMA mono power amplifier, also the most advanced in the company’s 30-year history. With wide-ranging inputs and outputs, including balanced connectivity, ULTIMA offers complete flexibility for high-performance partnering equipment, enhanced further by the fascia-mounted separate frequency EQ adjust controls for the left and right channels. Headphone outputs offer further flexibility for late-night and personal listening in style.

Each ULTIMA preamp is hand-made in the Kent factory, with the various stages of build and production carefully overseen by one highly skilled technician. Sensitive internal circuit features are protected by solid milled aluminium shielding to prevent RF interference and Chord Electronics’ legendary UK-produced aircraft-grade aluminium provides a solid and resonance-eliminating enclosure for the electronics within, complemented by the famous Integra Leg System.

Innovative dipole emitter

Thanks to its special, extremely compact build, the innovative Master Line Source 3 dipole emitter enables you to have a unique music listening experience in your own living room. Like its sister models, the elegant stand box is designed as a line source with dipole emitter characteristics. Four ribbon tweeters guarantee a supremely natural, detailed, spatial sound. This is enhanced by the two 180mm woofers and two same-sized passive radiators with a powerful bass foundation.

Newly developed LineSourceDriver

For the baffle with a width of only 23 centimetres, a smaller version of the ribbon for mid-range/high-frequency reproduction has been specially crafted, four units of which are installed above each another in the MLS 3. They work based on the dipole principle and at the same time directly emit the sound forwards and backwards in the form of a vertical cylindrical sound wave, whereby a slatted acoustic lens ensures product of a completely diffuse sound field behind the MLS 3.

Powerful woofer reproduction

In order to create a deep and powerful bass reproduction with the comparatively compact MLS 3 cabinet, the requirements concerning the electrodynamic properties of the woofers have also been set purposefully high. Two very newly developed 180mm UHQD drivers are used, ensuring dynamic and more voluminous woofer reproduction even at small volumes and with optimal impulse behaviour and substantial level stability.

Merging has recently shown a prototype version of the MERGING+CLOCK at audio fairs in Hong Kong and Denver. We will also be showing it in Darmstadt at Deutsche HiFi Tage 2018 on 3rd – 4th November and at Tokyo International Audio Show 2018 on 16th – 18th November. We anticipate shipping in time for Christmas. Primarily this product is designed to add to the existing range of MERGING+ products so it shares the same chassis, However, because this is an extraordinary product, we have provided additional outputs for use with other high end audio products or to provide Word Clock for professional users. There is an additional RAVENNA connection so that the CLOCK becomes the ultimate PTP Grand Master for the whole network when additional devices are added. There is a dedicated connector for MERGING+PLAYER or NADAC.
There are two versions of the MERGING+CLOCK. They both use instrument-grade crystal oscillators to achieve stability better than an atomic clock. The LN (Low Noise) version achieves a frequency stability of +/-25ppb which is remarkable enough, but the ULN (Ultra Low Noise) version achieves an unbelievable +/-10ppb. At least we believe so, but this is outside measurable limits!
The ULN version is dedicated to the audiophile who wants the ultimate clock, has the money to pay for it, and must have the absolute best.
We are confident the LN version already beats all other clocks on market. Our experts have been listening to both the ULN and the LN versions in very controlled conditions and they can confirm that there is a significant audible difference in both cases!

MERGING+CLOCK features

Merging is all about eliminating compromises but offering a choice to
meet different budgets. The MERGING+PLAYER offers fidelity and audio
quality that has left many critics in awe. The MERGING+POWER pushes
the envelope a little further by providing the optimum power conditions
for each circuit. The MERGING+CLOCK eliminates the last possible
performance compromise: The Master Clock.
>  MERGING+CLOCK gets you to the pinnacle of accuracy by employing
an instrument-grade crystal oscillator OXCO that is coupled to a Q
Damping System. This reduces the effects of any mechanical vibrations
that might be present in your listening environment. Merging offers a
choice of performance to match the budget and expectation.
The MERGING+CLOCK LN offers extraordinary accuracy with a
frequency stability of +/-25ppb but if the ultimate is your goal, the
MERGING+CLOCK ULN version offers the almost unbelievable figure of
+/-10ppb.

>  Years of experience and research by Merging led to the discovery
of these critical points – short-term clock stability and phase noise
performance are exceptionally important for sound quality.
MERGING+CLOCK provides the state-of-the-art solution for digital audio
applications, which achieves 3E-13 grade short-term stability at sub-
second and as low as -120dBc at 1Hz offset (ULN). More important
than the technical specifications, the MERGING+CLOCK will stir the
emotions and touch your heart with the purity of the sound.
>  High-precision clocks are supplied by a number of manufacturers and
there are recognized standards for devices that are not part of a
network. The MERGING+CLOCK provides three different connection
types. The first is the RJ45 connector for RAVENNA/AES67 networks;
two 10MHz BNC connectors for other Hi-End components and BNC
Word Clock connectors for every sample rate from 44.1kHz to
1536kHz. That is 32 times 1FS!

SHEFFIELD, South Yorkshire – Wilson Benesch the leader in high-performance loudspeaker design and manufacture, is pleased to announce its new Precision Series loudspeaker line. In partnership with German importers IBEX Audio Gmbh, Wilson Benesch will introduce the P3.0 floorstanding loudspeaker at an exclusive event in Berlin, Germany on Saturday 3rd November 2018.

 

The Precision Series sets a new benchmark within the entry point into the companies loudspeaker lines, retaining exotic high-performance technologies that have been developed by Wilson Benesch over three-decades.

Thanks to heavy investment in manufacturing technology and a ruthless pursuit of manufacturing excellence and efficiency, the Precision Series, alike with the reference loudspeaker line, is created entirely in-house using a fleet of precision CNC-machines. As the company enters its 30th Anniversary year, it will deliver Precision Series loudspeakers to thousands of customers globally faster than ever before.

SIGNATURE TECHNOLOGIES

Leonardo Tweeter – Wilson Benesch announced the latest generation of its high-frequency drive technology at the Munich HIGH END in May. Precision Series now takes the principle elements of this design and distills them into its Leonardo tweeter. The silk-dome tweeter resides at the centre of an additive manufactured carbon fibre composite Fibonacci Element. This radical design is a further extension of the original system developed for the Fibonacci tweeter that made its debut in the flagship, Eminence. Due to its complex hybrid construction, reflective and absorptive surfaces match the output of the tweeter dome enabling a response that is significantly superior to the plain surface form of a conventional tweeter design. As with the Eminence, expert acoustic design legislates for perfect integration of the Tactic II drive unit and the Leonardo tweeter. Developed in tandem the acoustic signature can best be described as engagingly coherent and effortlessly natural.

Tactic II Drive Unit – The Tactic II Drive unit has been honed to perfection over decades of incremental and painstaking development. Collaboratively developed in partnership with Sheffield Hallam University each and every facet of the design has been modeled and analysed using State-of-the-Art FEA simulation. This third generation version builds upon time proven materials science that Wilson Benesch brought to the market out of the Government supported Bishop Research project. The Isotactic Polypropylene cone was collaboratively developed with Professor Ward FRS of Leeds University. The Tactic II sets the industry standard in terms of optimal stiffness and self-damping. Significantly it affords the possibility of the simplest of crossover designs. Collecting awards of international renown in products such as Resolution, Cardinal and Endeavour, the Tactic II is reference class technology at an affordable price point.

Enclosure Technology – Materials science and of course enclosure systems have been a principal focus for Wilson Benesch since its inception. As the pioneer of advanced composite systems based upon carbon fibre, Wilson Benesch has distilled the intellectual property developed over three decades within its new loudspeaker line. Hybridised multi-material construction continues to represent the State-of-the-Art in enclosure design. In the Precision Series, it is deployed via two U-section aluminium elements that create an enclosure geometry that elevates the first resonant frequency several orders of magnitude higher than a flat panel design. In turn, these U-section elements are used as anchor points, enabling high compressive forces to be applied to the members sandwiched between. The result is a stiff, highly damped and almost silent enclosure with a contemporary design aesthetic.

Meet the A1 successor. Featuring a huge new power supply design, the A1.5 power amplifier effortlessly delivers up to 150W / 8 Ohms per channel in Stereo mode or 1200W / 2 ohms in Bridge mode. The A1’s flexibility of use and future-proof modularity have been kept untouched allowing the amplifier to be reconfigured from Stereo to Bi-amplification, Monaural or to Bridge at the push of a button. CH Precision’s unique ExactBias circuitry as well as the critically acclaimed loudspeaker matching topology forge the heart of the A1.5.

Further refined, taller, more powerful, the A1.5 is in every way an A1… and a half!

What’s more, every A1 ever produced can be upgraded to an A1.5 amplifier.

Modularity
The A1.5 power amplifier has been developed with modularity in mind. It can be equipped with a single analog input board in case the A1.5 is used as a single channel but a second analog input board can also be fitted from factory for stereo operation. This modularity ensures the following operation modes:

bi-amplification modes, both passive and active
bridge mode
Changing the A1.5 operating mode is easy and can be done on-the-fly from the front panel user interface and our tablet app. Only the available options are visible depending of the hardware configuration.

Power Supply
The central power supply is taking most of the internal space of the chassis. The huge 1’700VA transformer is mounted on silent-blocks to avoid at maximum its vibrations to be fed-back into the sensitive part of the circuitry. It is shielded both with a magnetic screen and an electrostatic one. The transformer plate is also secured for transportation.

For optimum thermal performances, the output stage diode bridges are mounted directly onto the amplifiers heatsinks and are of hyper-fast soft-recovery type.

The A1.5 features extremely low-ESR filtering capacitors ensuring tremendeous current capabilities for controlling the most demanding speakers.

Analog stages
All analog stages inside the A1.5 are built only with discrete components, no operational amplifier have been used into these sections. This deliberate choice warranties the shortest audio signal path and allows the use of custom-made building blocks.

No capacitors have been used in the signal path, nor any output relay to ensure maximum transparency.

Gain
A gain range of 24dB – with steps of 0.5dB – is embedded into each channel, for a perfect match with the loudspeakers sensitivity and room size. A lower gain is typically preferred for high-sensitivity speakers into a small room while a bigger gain is sometimes needed for large rooms with low-sensitvity loudspeakers.

This gain adjustment can also be useful with multi-amplified loudspeakers to fine-tune the various drivers level.

Output stage feedback
Like with the A1, the A1.5 output stage features the CH loudspeaker matching circuitry. The ratio between the global and local feedbacks is adjustable on-the-fly from the front panel user interface or through our tablet app. Each step is 20%, going from 0% – local feedback only – to 100%.

A different feedback ratio can be set for each channel in bi-amplification mode allowing an even finer tuning of the connected loudspeaker.

ExactBias
Keeping the output stage bias current constant ensures the amplifier to remain as linear as possible. The bias current is highly sensitive to temperature changes.

ExactBias has been designed to maintain the output stage bias current constant, by monitoring both the amplifier heatsink and output transistors temperatures, irrespectively of the musical program and room temperature.

In terms of performance, the A1.5 class-AB designed with ExactBias technology outperforms a pure class-A design with usual bias compensation.

Protections
The voltage and current delivered to the loudspeakers is permanently monitored thanks to a non-intrusive circuitry. A digital signal processor not only works out in real-time the effective output power, but also protects the amplifier in case of a short-circuit across the loudspeaker binding posts.
