Technical Audio Devices Laboratories, Inc., today announced the TAD-ME1TX bookshelf speaker system as the newest addition to its Evolution Series of hi-fi speakers.
The TAD-ME1TX is to replace the critically acclaimed TAD-ME1, which was introduced in 2016. A host of refinements incorporated into the TAD-ME1TX to achieve enhanced audio performance include a tweeter in the Coherent Source Transducer (CST) driver that features a beryllium diaphragm manufactured using our proprietary vapor-deposition technique, just like those found in our higher-end speakers. The TAD-ME1TX has inherited the already proven Bidirectional Aero-Dynamic Slot (ADS) port design from its predecessor.
Main Features
1) 9 cm CST driver delivers ideal single-point-source sound
The TAD-ME1TX boasts TAD’s proprietary CST driver, which controls the directivity of the concentrically mounted midrange and tweeter over an extended frequency range from the point of matching phase. TAD-ME1TX’s 9 cm CST driver achieves clear and solid imaging, as well as natural sound-field reproduction. The midrange cone controls the directional characteristic of the concentrically mounted tweeter to bring the phase and directivity of their output in line in the crossover region. The result is wide-range sound reproduction from 420 Hz to 60 kHz by the CST driver alone, while achieving a natural attenuation characteristic and directivity pattern across all bands.
2) Tweeter features a beryllium diaphragm
The TAD-ME1TX uses a newly developed, light yet rigid 25 mm beryllium diaphragm for its tweeter, manufactured with our proprietary vapor deposition technique. We have applied our computer-analyzed optimization technique called Harmonized Synthetic Diaphragm Optimum Method (HSDOM) in designing the form of the diaphragm. This technique enables the precise control of the diaphragm’s divided vibrations and piston motions, which makes possible wide-range sound reproduction of up to 60 kHz.
3) Midrange features a newly developed magnesium diaphragm with a high internal-loss characteristic
The midrange’s diaphragm made of magnesium alloy achieves lightweight and high internal loss properties. The combination of anodization and coating applied to the surface of the diaphragm gives it additional hardness and a yet greater internal loss. Combined with the suppression of even the smallest resonance arising from where a leading wire is connected to the voice coil, the result is clear, distortion-free reproduction in the midrange. In addition, the arm of the frame basket that houses a magnetic circuit has been redesigned to achieve much greater structural strength and allow smoother propagation of sound waves behind the midrange diaphragm.
4) Woofer features an MACC diaphragm
The 16 cm woofer employs a Multi-layered Aramid Composite Cone (MACC) diaphragm composed of laminated layers of woven aramid fabric and non-woven fabric of different material to deliver a rich, clear sound in the low-frequency-range, as well as a coloration-free sound in the mid-to-low-frequency range. The combination of the refined Linear Drive Magnet Circuit (LDMC) and a corrugated surround made of foamed polycarbonate contributes to outstanding linearity and delivers deep and clear bass. Furthermore, the arm of the woofer basket has been redesigned to achieve greater structural strength to withstand the powerful movement of the woofer and allow smoother propagation of sound waves behind its diaphragm.
5) SILENT enclosure combines structural strength with an outstanding vibration-dampening characteristic
The TAD-ME1TX comes in a SILENT (Structurally Inert Laminated Enclosure Technology) enclosure, which combines sturdy birch-plywood braces with medium-density fiberboard (MDF) panels having a high internal loss to provide superb structural strength and an outstanding low-resonance characteristic. The addition of 5 mm-thick steel panels to the right and left sides of the enclosure further reduces the vibration of the cabinet down to a minimum. Moreover, acoustic absorbent chosen and placed carefully inside the enclosure, based on meticulous analyses of internal standing waves, helps eliminate standing waves that would adversely affect the sound field and imaging performance of the speaker.
6) Bidirectional ADS port design contributes to rich and natural-sounding bass
As its predecessor, the TAD-ME1TX employs the Bidirectional Aero-Dynamic Slot (ADS) port design, which places slit-shaped ports (ducts) inside the right and left side-panels of the enclosure with flared openings to the front and rear to allow a smoother airflow through them. This design helps reduce port noise generated at high amplitude levels and keeps internal standing waves from escaping from the ports, resulting in a rich, responsive bass. The symmetrically placed port openings, both laterally and along the front-rear axis, cancel out vibrations from the port movement to deliver a natural-sounding bass response.
7) Two color variants to choose from to match room decor
The TAD-ME1TX comes in two color variants to offer options to choose from to better match the room decor. In addition to the black finish, which was available to its predecessor, the TAD-ME1TX is also available in new silver white finish. Skilled artisans spend hours finishing each enclosure with meticulous care, beginning with applying high-grade, clear coating to the surface and buffing the base coating and finishing with surface polishing. The TAD-ME1TX comes as standard with non-slip pads to be placed under the enclosure, a cleaning cloth, and a woofer grille having a minimum adverse effect on the speaker’s performance.
8) Matching speaker stand specially designed for TAD-ME1TX (sold only in pairs)
The matching TAD-ST3TX-K and TAD-ST3TX-SWstands are designed to bring out the best of the TAD-ME1TX. They employ a slanted design to suppress the reflection and diffraction of the sound from the speaker and achieve greater structural strength and a high vibration-dampening characteristic.

Unfolding TIDAL excellence in electronics and loudspeaker design and bringing it together into a new masterpiece – the AP1. The idea for our latest achievement began with the launch of our ‘moonshot project’ TIDAL x Bugatti. The Royale was and is a high-end loudspeaker that is fundamentally game-changing in both execution and performance, making it, to this day, truly incomparable. And that, of course, was the very intention.
However, there is also a downside – especially for our dedicated supporters and clients worldwide: its extreme complexity and the immense effort required for its manufacturing result in an even more limited allocation, making it difficult to offer to a broader audience of music lovers. And this is where our challenge began.
The AP1 brings the Royale concept into the timeless and unmistakable design language of all TIDAL masterpieces. It is a fully powered loudspeaker unlike any other technical concept on the market. With unique speaker drivers paired with equally distinctive power amplification, the AP1 is designed for a seamless plug-and-play performance that is second to… well, we’d say: only second to one.
Four omni-polar radiating long-stroke subwoofers, each operating at different crossover frequency points, reproduce the deepest frequencies with exceptional precision. And seamlessly integrate with the four high-efficiency front drivers. These front drivers include two long-excursion woofers, a midrange driver, and a diamond tweeter. Each is custom-built for its specific frequency range and unique role in shaping the AP1’s sonic composition.
To ensure optimal positioning and structural rigidity, all drivers are mounted within a sealed cabinet crafted from the latest generation of our proprietary TIRALIT™ material. Each driver is housed in a hermetically isolated chamber and mounted to a constraint-layer sandwich construction out of aluminum, stainless steel, and TIRALIT™. But this is just the beginning – the real challenge lies in seamlessly merging all elements without the drawbacks of traditional active or passive speakers. The Royale truly paved the way for what we transported into the AP1.
Unlike conventional active speaker designs, the AP1 employs our unique hybrid amplification, integrating different technologies for each frequency range—adhering to our general topology principles that have earned our masterpieces a global reputation. Every signal path remains 100% analog and as short as possible. There is no DSP, AD/DA conversion, or equalizing to compensate for compromises, only to introduce new ones.
The result is eight highly specialized drivers perfectly mounted, seamlessly fused, and amplified into the closest possible approximation of a single, invisible point source with almost endless dynamic headroom. Yet, despite its advanced engineering, the AP1 is designed for effortless usability since it adapts to small and large rooms, whether placed close to a wall or freestanding, with two easy adjustments.
The AP1 is one of the most ambitious projects we’ve ever brought to life—for many reasons. But first and foremost, it delivers a level of performance and results that was once thought unthinkable—not because of what it offers within its given design and concept—but because of it. And to address the tiny elephant in the room regarding its name, as it stands out a bit from the usual nomenclature of TIDAL speakers: Does AP stand for Active Powered? No—AP1 stands for the statement behind it, being so much more: Amplified Performance, First of its kind.

Technology Story
To achieve superior sound quality, the AQUILA X3 integrates several of AURALiC’s most celebrated technologies from the G2.2 series, including Direct Data Recording (DDR), Galvanic Isolation, ORFEO passive analog volume control, ORFEO Class A output modules, and the Purer-Power low-noise design. In addition to these established features, AQUILA X3 introduces groundbreaking innovations that merit a closer look.
Variable-Frequency External PSU
To meet the X series’ modular and future-proof design requirements and to allow for future upgrades, the AQUILA X3 is equipped with a power supply boasting a capacity of over 200 watts—more than quadruple that of the previous generation. The power supply occupies its own dedicated chassis, with separate modules for the processing and audio circuits, each powered by independent regenerated AC circuits.
Modern energy grids increasingly rely on renewable sources like solar and wind power. While environmentally friendly, these energy sources pose unique challenges for high-fidelity audio systems. Solar inverters, which convert the DC output of solar panels into AC power compatible with the grid, often introduce high-frequency harmonics during the conversion process. These harmonics can cause electrical interference and disruptions to audio equipment sensitive to power quality. Additionally, fluctuating solar irradiance levels can result in voltage sags or swells, further complicating grid stability.
Similarly, wind energy systems contribute to grid instability due to the inherent variability of wind speeds. These fluctuations can cause voltage and frequency deviations, introducing further challenges for maintaining clean power. Compounding the issue, subpar inverters used by some homeowners to feed energy back into the grid can inject noise and contamination, negatively affecting power quality across the network.
AURALiC has extensively researched solutions to these challenges, exploring methods such as advanced AC EMI filtering and battery-based designs. Ultimately, the company developed a unique AC regeneration technology that ensures a pristine power supply for high-performance audio equipment. This technology begins by using a low-noise transformer to convert mains AC into DC voltage. A Class AB amplifier, driven by a low-distortion sine wave clock source, reconstructs a pure AC power signal. The amplifier, designed with a high Power Supply Rejection Ratio (PSRR) and limited bandwidth, filters out contamination while amplifying only the required signal frequency. A coupling transformer further eliminates noise and unwanted harmonics, creating a power source that is immune to grid instability and contamination.
The regeneration frequency, which can affect the sound character, is adjustable via the AQUILA X3’s software, with options up to 400Hz. This feature allows users to fine-tune the audio experience to their preferences.
By addressing the real-world challenges posed by modern renewable energy grids, AURALiC’s Variable-Frequency External PSU exemplifies the company’s commitment to delivering exceptional performance in any environment. Whether dealing with noise from a solar inverter or fluctuations caused by wind power, the AQUILA X3’s power regeneration technology ensures unmatched stability and purity for superior sound quality.
Lightning Cast – The Next Gen Streaming Technology
Developed by AURALiC, LightningCast is an open-source, next-generation multi-room high-resolution streaming technology. Free for non-commercial public use, it focuses on delivering the best sound quality to audio systems while ensuring ease of use. LightningCast is a new and unique proprietary technology and as such we have created a separate section explaining this exciting new development. Please refer the LightningCast community and learn more.
Fusion DAC Gen II
The Fusion DAC, first introduced in the G2.2 series, revolutionized digital-to-analog conversion by combining the strengths of discrete ladder and Delta-Sigma DAC architectures. This unique approach bypasses many standard DAC chip functions, including the PLL, digital filters, and oversampling circuits, replacing them with AURALiC’s proprietary technologies for clock reconstruction, digital filtering, and oversampling. This innovation ensures that only the precise switching network of the DAC chip is used for digital-to-analog conversion, delivering superior accuracy and sound quality.
The Fusion DAC Gen II takes this concept to a new level, featuring significant advancements in performance. AURALiC has engineered the Gen II hardware to achieve lower distortion and noise levels while extending the dynamic range, ensuring a cleaner and more immersive audio experience.
One of the standout features of the original Fusion DAC design was its Tone Mode Control, which offered users a choice between two predefined sound profiles: Clear, emphasizing detail and clarity, and Mellow, providing a warmer and smoother sound. With Fusion DAC Gen II, these two settings are retained, but the tone control system has been vastly expanded. Users now have the ability to customize their own tone modes using two new parameters: ‘Richness’ and ‘Texture’.
The ‘Richness’ parameter influences the tonal warmth and body, ranging from neutral to lush and full-bodied. Meanwhile the ‘Texture’ control allows users to adjust the level of detail and clarity in the sound, from ultra-smooth to highly detailed. Together, these controls enable users to create custom sound profiles that suit their personal preferences and listening environments. Whether a listener prefers the analytical precision of Clear, the soothing warmth of Mellow, or a bespoke combination tailored to their unique taste, Fusion DAC Gen II offers unprecedented flexibility.
Integrated LEO Clock
Clocking precision is critical to achieving high-performance digital-to-analog conversion, and AURALiC has consistently led the way in master clock technology. The original LEO Master Clock, introduced in 2017, set a new benchmark by directly driving the DAC rather than relying on a 10MHz external clock for PLL-based frequency reconstruction. This direct approach significantly reduced jitter and enhanced timing accuracy, delivering industry-leading performance.
The LEO clock is so precise that existing benchmarks aren’t detailed enough to accurately represent what it can do. Instead, we use Allan deviation to describe the resolution, which is like looking at phase noise closely enough to detect shifts of +/-1Hz or even +/-0.1Hz. The LEO Clock achieves the same exceptional performance as the original, boasting an Allan deviation of 2E-12 (at 1 second), which is equal to a 10MHz rubidium atomic clock with phase noise of +/-1Hz at -110dBc/Hz, or an amazing 500 times less jitter than an 82fs Femto clock oscillator.
For the AQUILA X3, AURALiC took on the ambitious challenge of integrating the LEO clock—previously housed in a standalone unit—directly into the DAC module. This required overcoming significant engineering hurdles to maintain the clock’s renowned precision and performance within the compact confines of the module, while also enhancing reliability and durability. Remarkably, the integrated LEO Clock retains the same exceptional performance as its standalone predecessor. Furthermore, by eliminating external clock cables and connectors—common sources of jitter and signal degradation—the new design delivers a cleaner, more stable transmission path, making it both more robust and reliable for long-term use.
Boulder will now discontinue sales of the 1160 and 1161 to make way for the new models 1162 Stereo Power Amplifier and the 1163 Power Amplifier. More news on the 1162 and 1163 coming soon.

At the heart of the Wavedream Reference is our custom architecture, crafted for the highest level of precision and ultimate refinement in audio reproduction. Our DAC is built upon a highly optimized and efficient AMD/ZYNQ chip for master control/network renderer and 4 FPGAs, one for each phase of the discrete conversion system. The machine runs a Rockna custom tailored Linux system which takes care of everything except audio processing – which is executed by the dedicated hardware blocks.
To achieve an elegant internal layout, we designed a 10-layer central core board for the digital front-end processing and the network renderer. A completely new dedicated low noise supply board was developed, as well as new conversion boards placed in a symmetrical configuration, two for each channel. Compared to the classic Wavedream, the design was optimized by shortening the clock and data signal paths and by using higher quality board-to-board connectors. Therefore, signal integrity was significantly improved. Furthermore, the toroid transformers and the display are shielded internally using a copper cage. The analog stages following the D/A conversion modules are hidden on the back of the left and right boards.
The Rockna philosophy for an exceptional DAC is mastering the art of connecting mixed-signal technologies in such a way that the output preserves all the fine nuances of the original recording. Many think the secret is proper digital processing, but that is just one piece of the puzzle. When moving the audio information from digital to analog domain, the clock system plays a critical role in giving a sense of realism, analog sound and creating audio 3D imagery. Most D/A converters take the easy route by relying on the ASRC (acronym for asynchronous sample rate converter) built in the chips they use. While the ASRC may have a sound signature in itself, the quality of the ASRC implemented in DAC chips is affected by cost and silicon real-estate, thus being prone to sound quality degradation.
In the Wavedream Reference we developed one of the most advanced, ASRC-free digital PLL clock solutions which gives the DAC the ability to perform like an analogic source, with a natural sense pf pace and rhythm. Another key element is that digital signals physically travel as high-speed analog signals and they must be treated accordingly. Bits are bits on an abstract level but on pcb traces, connectors, cables they are a succession of high-speed rectangular analog signals which are not perfect: they have rise-time, fall time and they could be plagued by ringing, spikes, reflections, crosstalk, phase noise(jitter) etc. This is why Rockna has perfected radio-frequency techniques to mitigate these issues which have the potential to ruin the pursued analog sound.
The complexity of the Reference power supply is shown in the adjacent diagram. We had to perfectly balance the efficiency, internal real estate and the need for ultra low noise required for the DAC performance. Over 20 power-related circuits drive over 90.000 uF of capacitance. The audio grade toroid transformers are hidden under a thick copper sheet which acts as a shield.
For the D/A conversion stage we developed a evolved version of the mighty DAC modules used in the classic Wavedream DAC. The modules themselves are complex pieces of technology, sharing a discrete sign-magnitude hybrid ladder topology, driven by a complex algorithm which is embedded into their own FPGA. They can sustain sample rates up to a few MHz and the output of the DAC modules is un-buffered, allowing maximum transparency and natural sound reproduction.
The last stage of the signal path is the analog output stage. It’s contribution to the final sound is of extreme importance. Designed from the scratch to work with the new conversion modules, the output stage is totally discrete and acts as a high-speed buffer, while keeping the circuit simple enough to achieve full transparency. We combined JFET & bipolar devices into a class A design, with a low closed-loop output impedance and very low noise, as a perfect match for the overall performance of the machine.
DIGITAL FILTERS
The internal FPGA up-samples any material to a fixed rate of 16x. The DAC modules will decode the digital stream with a rate of 768Khz, or 705.6Khz, respectively, according to input sample rate. We found this rate to be optimal for analog performance of the DAC modules. Behind this simple multiplication factor lies significant processing power. The digital filters are made with the combined effort of multiple DSP blocks working in parallel.
After lots of mathematical simulations and careful listening tests, we have created a custom Parks-McClellan up-sampling filter. There are three variations available : linear, minimum and hybrid phase. They are highly optimized filters, offering stunning performance with a large number of taps, offering excellent filtering capabilities, and they are different in regard of impulse response. For the linear phase, the ringing energy (Gibb’s overshoot) is equally split before and after impulse. Minimum phase type shows all this energy after impulse, while our special hybrid phase filter has a combined response between linear and minimum, exhibiting very low overshoot before the impulse.
The network renderer built inside Reference is unique not only because is our proprietary approach, but because it is seamlessly integrated into the DAC digital front-end. There is no separate “streamer section” or extra board, which removes the need for a dedicated external connection and unnecessary obstacles into the digital signal path. Natively integrated inside the Rockna ZYNQ SoC, the renderer can truly shine, allowing perfect sonic performance when selected.
Clean user interface and simplicity in use is a part of the Reference experience. Our team put a lot of effort in designing a proper user interface. There are three options to control the device: the front-panel touchscreen display, the classic infra-red remote and the Reference mobile apps, available for iOS and Android.
